New Website Will Make You Rethink Parenting Teens
Welcome to the newly redesigned Teen Counseling Center of San Diego website! We’re here to provide parenting support and counseling services for your teenager. For a quick summary of who we are, check out our About section. In this post, we will go a bit deeper and cover what you can expect from our website going forward.
Origins of the Teen Counseling Center
The Teen Counseling Center is part of Integrity Counseling Group—even though it predates Integrity by about 10 years! In 2010, Cory Anderson, LMFT, realized that San Diego could use more mental health resources tailored to teens and their parents. Cory drew on his years of experience working with foster youth and private clients to create the Center.
Nine years later, Cory established Integrity Counseling Group, a group therapy practice with 6 other therapists, 5 of whom also specialize in teen counseling, among other things. On our staff, you’ll find therapists who have worked in private foster homes, group foster homes, high schools, colleges, youth groups, and more.
United by a Passion for Teen Counseling
While we come from diverse backgrounds, what unites us is our belief that adolescence is one of the most critical stages of development. As teens establish themselves as independent from their parents, they become extremely open to new experiences and ideas.
At it’s worst, this openness can lead to unhealthy choices like experimenting with drugs or pornography. But with guidance from you and a therapist experienced in teen counseling, this openness can instead lead to profound growth that will set your teen up to thrive for years to come.
That’s why we are so passionate about reaching this age group and have established a website focused solely on teen counseling.
How We Reach Hesitant Teens
Your teen may not want counseling. That is perfectly normal!
Teen clients often come to us for the first time because their parents “made them.” We approach situations like this using something called “motivational interviewing.”
In short, we help your teen identify what they want out of therapy. You teen may simply want “to get my parents of my back.” If that’s the case, great! We’ll start there. In future sessions, we may ask questions like:
“Why do you think your parents are always nagging you?” (It might have to do with school, friends, etc.)
“What do you think you can do to make the situation better with your parents?”
“What is keeping you from making those changes?”
“What do you have control of in your life?”
As your teen realizes that we are listening and on their side, they open up and a tremendous amount of progress can be made. Throughout the process, we’ll connect with you, the parent, so you know what we are working on in session and how you can support your teen’s growth.
What to Expect from Our Website
We created the Teen Counseling Center of San Diego website to support parents. In our previous iteration, the website just served to advertise our services.
Going forward, we want to provide you and your fellow parents with resources that will give you encouragement and grace as you navigate adolescence with your teen and help them launch into healthy adulthood. This will include blog posts, videos, webinars, and newsletters all geared toward this unique developmental time.
